The Swan As A Metaphor

Across many cultures, swans symbolize certain qualities including grace, perseverance, healing and tranquility. They embody a stoic elegance and inner strength, while are also known to be fiercely protective over those they care for.  In much the same way, Serene Breast and Wellness Center reflects the spirit of the swan: steadfast in our commitment to compassionate care, graceful in the approach to healing, and unwavering in our dedication to guiding each patient through their journey.

Serene’s Mission is Clear

To provide women affected by benign and malignant breast conditions with integrative care and superior outcomes.

Dr Heather King Headshot

Heather King, M.D., FACS

Founder, Breast surgical oncologist

Heather King, MD is a fellowship trained Breast Surgical Oncologist with an exceptional history of advanced care.

Dr. King completed a fellowship in Breast Surgical Oncology at the University of Miami and remained as faculty afterwards. She then completed additional training in Oncoplastic surgical techniques in Paris, France.

Dr. King then began working with Texas Oncology as the first fellowship-trained breast surgeon in Central Texas where she has made significant contributions to modernizing breast surgical care in the region. During her tenure with that group, she was instrumental in developing that practice into a successful, modern breast surgery group. She designed protocols for oncoplastic surgery that continue to be used today.

Her dedication to restoring the confidence and well-being of her patients is evident in her work. Through collaboration with plastic and reconstruction surgeons, Dr. King's innovative approach led to Austin’s first nipple-sparing mastectomy with immediate DIEP flap reconstruction, setting new standards for patient care. In addition, one of her most notable achievements was performing Austin’s first thoracic nerve dissection for Resensation mastectomy. This groundbreaking technique restores sensation after mastectomy and reconstruction, helping patients feel whole again.

Experience and Expertise:

  • Fellowship in Breast Surgical Oncology – University of Miami
  • Oncoplastic Surgical Mini Fellowship – L’Institut du Sein, Paris, France with Dr. Krishna Clough
  • First Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy with Immediate DIEP Flap Reconstruction in Austin
  • Resensation Mastectomy – First Thoracic Nerve Dissection in Austin

With the launch of Serene Breast and Wellness Center, Dr. King is proud to provide a new model of care for individuals facing breast-related concerns, from high-risk screenings to benign conditions and cancer treatment. The center offers not only advanced surgical procedures, but also in-house ultrasound, biopsies and supportive therapies such as dry needling and lymphatic drainage treatments. These complementary treatments help reduce side effects from surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy—leading to improved outcomes and a greater sense of peace.

Dr. King’s philosophy is to provide not only advanced medical care but also compassionate, personalized attention to each patient. She works closely with her patients to develop treatment plans tailored to their unique needs, ensuring that they feel heard, supported, and empowered throughout their journey.

Nancy Binford, M.D., FACOG

perimenopause and menopausal medicine

Dr. Binford has been caring for women in the Austin community since 1998. She is known for her attentive listening, thoughtful guidance, and her ability to help patients prioritize treatment decisions. She excels at translating medical science into clear, accessible language that empowers her patients to make informed choices. Having gone through menopause herself, she appreciates the long-overdue attention these life stages are receiving in social media and the public conversation.

In the setting of certain diagnoses, many women should avoid estrogen but struggle managing menopausal symptoms. Fortunately, today there are more nonhormonal treatment options available than ever before. Dr. Binford emphasizes that a woman’s long-term vitality is also influenced by nutrition, cardiovascular health, resistance training and meaningful community. Even when estrogen is not an option, Dr. Binford can effectively manage menopausal symptoms using evidence-based nonhormonal strategies.

For many women, Menopause Hormone Therapy (MHT) offers rapid and highly effective symptom relief. With decades of research supporting its use, MHT has well-established risks and benefits and utilizes hormones naturally produced by the female body. Dr. Binford has been encouraged by the growing data demonstrating that MHT is safe for most women, and she enjoys educating patients about the science and statistical evidence surrounding its safety profile.

A woman’s approach to the menopause transition is shaped by her life experiences and personal beliefs. Over the course of her career, Dr. Binford has treated hundreds of women navigating perimenopause and menopause. Because every journey is unique, having a clear, comprehensive discussion about the full range of treatment approaches is essential. Ana Knoben

Ana Knoben

practice director

Ana Knoben has been an essential part of Dr. King’s team for nearly a decade. Her connection to the practice began on a deeply personal level, at age thirty-three Ana was diagnosed with breast cancer and chose Dr. King as her surgeon. After completing chemotherapy and undergoing a successful operation, Ana’s experience as a young cancer patient inspired her to help other women navigate their own breast health journeys.

Ana is a trusted, comforting presence at Serene, helping shape the patient experience and supporting women through every stage of care. What means the most to her are the small moments of gratitude - a hug or a thank-you - that remind her why this work matters. Ana lives in Austin with her husband, three dogs, and a wise fifteen-year-old cat.

Before joining Dr. King, Ana spent more than seventeen years as a Veterinary Technician - a career that honed her attention to detail, compassion, and ability to provide calm support in stressful moments. Following her treatment, Ana sought a more personally fulfilling path and reached out to Dr. King about joining her team. Dr. King quickly recognized Ana’s empathy, organization, and natural connection with patients. Read more
